Keeping Well, Keeping Warm

by James Moore on 1 March, 2018

It’s pretty cold right now in Reading. “Keeping Well, Keeping Warm” is an important campaign because the UK has “excess winter deaths” every year when people die or go to hospital (if they can get) because of cold, usually in their homes. It is scandalous that it happens here more than in other countries such as in Scandinavia.

What are the things to remember if you may have a risk of problems?

1. Don’t ignore it. Don’t think you’ll be alright because you have been OK in the past. Cold is a serious threat.

2. Don’t let worry about future bills put you off heating your home properly. Staying alive comes first. There is help available if you need it later – and ask for it.

3. Don’t suffer in silence. Tell people if you’re worried or might need help. Family and neighbours will be happy to help with shopping or helping you to keep warm. Don’t suffer in silence.

4. Wear warm clothes and be careful about slips and trips if you’re not used to getting about muffled up.

5. Tell family, friends and neighbours if you are OK. It will reassure them and it makes it easier to ask for help if you need it.

6. If necessary, move into one room to keep warm. Neighbours will help to shift furniture if it’s needed. Also do all you can to keep kitchen and toilet warm – turn on the oven and leave the door open for a bit to warm the kitchen before you do anything. But be aware of the possible problems of Carbon Monoxide poisoning in one room and look for the signs. The Gas Safe Charity, the Gas Safe Register and the energy companies all have websites with advice.

If you are concerned about neighbours or family, visit or ring them, check whether you think there’s a problem and try to persuade them to do what’s necessary. Make sure they know there’s help available. Remember it’s not just elderly people; there are others who might be at risk and benefit cuts have increased the likelihood that people will have problems.
