Numbers. Many men are obsessed by them. The half time stats at the football, the record-breaking sales made by companies, the amount of votes needed to win an election or the speed of a new car. Numbers are central to everything that men know and love. There are, however, quite a few that we don’t know. That’s why this year, the focus for Men’s Health Week is numbers.
Men’s Health Week is organised by the Men’s Health Forum and takes place every year in the week preceding Father’s Day. Men are often embarrassed and hesitant to discuss their health causing men’s health to be seen as a taboo topic. This year the week takes place between 10th and 16th June, focusing on the numbers behind the key issues facing men’s health, and encourages men to open up and talk about these issues.
Some of the numbers are particularly alarming and show the need for an increased focus on men’s health. Many numbers aim to help men stay healthy in their day to day life. For example men should aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical exercise a week and should drink a maximum of 14 units of alcohol a week. A particularly shocking statistic comes with the number 75. 75% of people who take their own lives are men. This number is shocking and fully highlights the need for more attention on men’s health.
There are many ways to take part in Men’s Health Week and many more stats to see. They can be seen here and the events can be followed on social media through the hashtags below.
