Letter to paper: 20 is Plenty

by James Moore on 1 January, 2018

My neighbours and I are delighted that RBC have considered our petition for 20mph limits on Brunswick Street and roads off. We hope they will implement this important road safety measure in a short timeframe.

20’s Plenty is a road danger reduction campaign, asking Councillors to vote for residential 20mph limits without road humps where people live. 12+ million people already live in places committed to 20mph limits.

The most important benefit of the scheme is that on roads where a 20mph speed limit has been implemented there has been a 22% reduction in casualties! 20mph speed limits also save 12% of fuel and noise is 40% less, whilst journey trip times are mostly unaffected, and the speed limits can be enforced using light touch policing methods. Bristol has also found that implementing the scheme has increased walking and cycling by 20%, and that for every £1 spent the health benefits for increased walking and cycling can be equated to a saving of £24
